Virus update: Anna Kournikova has a Dutch touch

The Kournikova virus is still spreading, although sightings have tailed off a little from this morning's peak.

NEWS Between 9.00 (GMT) and 10.00 (GMT) this morning, MessageLabs saw 1,500 copies of the virus, falling to 1,000 copies for the hour that followed. Alex Shipp, from MessageLabs, said: "It is quietish now - we're waiting for the US to wake up. The virus mails itself out through your address book but there is no destructive payload." Shipp added that someone claiming to be the virus writer entered a discussion in a chatroom last night. He, or she, is believed, from their IP address, to be from the Netherlands. Phil Fraher, CEO of Brightmail, said: "I think we've learnt something since the LoveBug. The anti-virus vendors were quicker off the mark this time." Fraher added that his company immediately used its anti-spam software to block the mail by subject line. They added the anti-virus software once it was available - five hours later.
