More deadly than a virus?

Employees - persistent, pernicious and on the payroll

NEWS 86 per cent of companies whose computer systems are attacked find that the perpetrators are their own staff. Nosey employees cause mayhem by accessing sensitive files far more often than viruses manage to infiltrate, according to IT security specialists Integralis. Two thirds of companies have been hit by their own staff, while only 47 per cent of companies have been attacked by viruses, the survey found. Not content with causing deliberate harm, a staggering 86 per cent of IT departments have had to sort out the mess caused by staff sending each other pornography and other junk mail, according to the research. Employees usually get away with it, too - only 50 per cent of companies surveyed had brought the police in to deal with the problem once it had been discovered.
