Virus attacks soar to record high

NEWS Virus infections for January to May this year are three times higher than for the same period last year, according to a report published today. The Japanese IT Promotion Agency (IPA) said for the five-month period they recorded 8,234 instances of virus infection. Graham Cluley, at AV firm Sophos, said the increased awareness of viruses, the greater number of people using the web, and an increased acceptance of 'western'-compatible operating systems and applications in Japan, has probably caused more reporting of viruses than ever. Cluley added: "In Japan, like in the rest of the world, viruses continue to be a serious problem. But good, up-to-date anti-virus software and safe computing practices can protect people wherever they are in the world. We are not in an 'end of the world as we know it' scenario." The three main offenders were the Hybris (469 cases), MTX (264), and Magistr (209). For related news see:
