NEWS Following the Code Red worm's targeted attack on the White House internet servers over the last fortnight, the US Government has issued unprecedented warnings about the virus, calling it a distinct threat to the internet. Representatives of President Bush, the FBI and Microsoft are planning a news conference later today to bring attention to the worm. They will highlight the possibility of Code Red coming back to life in the next two days in a mutated and even more dangerous form. On the first day of the outbreak, Code Red infected more than 250,000 systems, eventually forcing the US Defence Department to close down its public facing sites between 20 July and 24 July. Officials are urging businesses to install a security patch available on Microsoft's website. The worm exploits a vulnerability in internet server software running over NT4.0 and Windows 2000. A full patch to plug the flaw is available at http://www.microsoft.com/technet
