FBI warns of web vigilantes

Angry reaction to terrorism may manifest online...

NEWS The FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) is alerting businesses to a new wave of cybercrime attacks following last week's terrorist attacks on the US. The NIPC has warned that it expects to see a surge in the number of attempted web hacks and viruses as a result of the tragedy. But rather than an external terrorist threat, the FBI claims the biggest danger comes from "self-described patriot hackers" - vigilante hackers targeting groups or organisations they believe to be responsible for Tuesday's attacks. The NIPC also expects to see a number of old internet viruses reappear after they've been renamed to appear related to recent events. One such incident has already been reported in which a new version of the life stages virus was renamed wtc.txt.vbs to appear to be related to the World Trade Center.
