Gemplus wrestles with Sumo smartcard

Cleverer than a large Japanese man in a nappy...

NEWS Gemplus, the smartcard technology vendor, unveiled its latest product at CarteS show in Paris today. The Sumo (secured unlimited memory on card) has 224 megabytes of memory and aims to tackle the security and digital rights management issues involved in downloading content from the internet. The giant memory chip, made by Hitachi, resides inside the card and can store a variety of content. This content is then protected by a smart chip which stores the digital keys and access rights to the content. Sumo can host a number of copyright applications and the content can be transferred from one device to another. An additional plug-in SIM card can be created with the standard 64MB of memory for mobile phone applications.
