NEWS An addition to the Data Protection Act will allow workers access to any records that mention them by name for as little as £10. These include appraisal notes and sickness, disciplinary and training records as well as email logs and audit trails. Employers will have to surrender information in almost all cases, including highly sensitive situations such as disciplinary actions. Employers do have some protection under the new code, known as The Information Code on Employee Standards, but only for information deemed to be of use for 'management forecasting' - such as plans to promote an employee or to make them redundant. Lawyers are warning companies they face a horrible surprise as emails are known to be a source of unguarded and often defamatory comments. Although UK firms are likely to cry foul over the new development, their counterparts in France and The Netherlands already follow similar guidelines.
