NEWS Attempts are being made in the US to get a version of Linux security certified to persuade users that it is safer than other operating systems. The Cyberspace Policy Institute (CPI) is lobbying to get the Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) operating system EAL4 security certified (a widely recognised security standard). SELinux was developed by the National Security Agency, which claims it is more secure than mainstream operating systems and is therefore suitable for mission critical applications. The CPI is launching an effort to get this version of Linux certified and aims to find sponsors to fund the venture. Gaining the certification could make the system more attractive the commercial world and government agencies. Microsoft is currently trying to get Windows 2000 certified.
