Scottish ISP laid low by hackers

DoS attack leaves customers without access to web...

NEWS Scottish ISP edNet has been hit by a denial of service (DoS) attack which left its customers without connection to the internet most of yesterday. The attack crippled the ISP's network at around 08:00(BST) on Tuesday morning but it managed to restore services later on the night, according to the company's website. The attack focused on the edNet's Telnet ports, which have now been fortified with strong filters to keep any further DoS attempts at bay. A spokesman for edNet told silicon.com that the attack had started early on Monday morning. He said the ISP fixed its own network by lunchtime but had problems sorting out peer connections with other ISPs. He said the company was still investigating the cause of the outage. The DoS attack on edNet is just one of a series of attacks launched against UK ISPs in recent months. Cloud Nine was forced to close down in January after a DoS attack and Tiscali was subjected to a similar attack soon after.
