NEWS The writer of the Kournikova worm is to appeal against his sentence, despite the fact he has only been ordered to do 150 hours of community service. According to reports, the Dutch hacker denies intent to do damage, and doesn't feel he should have to serve any sentence at all. Under Dutch law, 21-year-old Jan de Wit could have been sentenced to a maximum of four years in prison for creating and spreading the worm. In the original trial, the judge cited lack of evidence of damage as the reason why de Wit didn't receive a custodial sentence. The Kournikova worm caused email gridlock in many companies in February 2001 when it spread for two days, luring victims with the promise of pictures of Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova. Last week the writer of the Melissa virus was sentenced to 20 months in prison in the US.
