NEWS The Business Software Alliance and the Motion Picture Association have drawn up a five point proposal that demands tighter penalties and deterrents for software piracy. Both organisations want the EU Enforcement Directive, due out soon, to take a tough line on piracy by harmonising penalties throughout Europe. Francisco Mingorance, director of policy at the Business Software Alliance, said: "The Copyright Directive updates the previous directive to include the digital era but we need a mechanism whereby the rights outlined in this directive can be harmonised throughout the EU and put in place. That is the Enforcement Directive's job." Mingorance said: "A lot of money can be made through software piracy. Cash is injected back into illegal activities in Europe including terrorism, organised crime and counterfeiting luxury goods." Mingorance said the European Union must enforce stringent penalties to deter pirates.
