Linux hacker tracked to Surbiton...

Would Swordfish have been sexier if Travolta and Jackman lived in Surbiton... or perhaps Thames Ditton...?

NEWS London commuter town Surbiton, once famed as the home of seventies sit-com the Good Life, and held up as the very model of suburban life, has found itself at the centre of a trans-Atlantic police investigation into cyber-crime. Scotland Yard and the FBI last week traced a 21-year-old British man to the sleepy tree-lined streets of Surbiton and arrested him for allegedly writing and distributing the T0rn rootkit tool which enables users to hack Linux servers. The unnamed man was arrested under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and computer equipment was seized from his house for further examination. The man was bailed over the weekend pending further investigation. In a statement Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos Anti-Virus, said: "Hackers, viruses and worms do not recognise national boundaries. A computer in San Francisco could be broken into by a youth in a Surrey back bedroom. It is encouraging to see the US and UK authorities working together to help stamp out computer crime. "Let's hope that if guilty, a suitable punishment is handed out that acts as a deterrent to others."
