NEWS Network Associates is to stump up $120m in cash for Entercept Security Technologies, the company that has dined out on its software's success in protecting systems from the infamous SQL Slammer worm. Privately-held Entercept provides intrusion protection technology whose selling point is stopping attacks before they are allowed to do any damage. Most security software works by reacting to a known threat, and then often only after a patch or other security software has been installed. With Entercept, NAI gets over 1,100 enterprise and government customers and what it regards as the perfect complement to its acquisition of IntruVert Networks on 1 April. IntruVert provides network-based intrusion protection. NAI owns the McAfee, Sniffer Technologies and Magic Solutions brands and has long been one of the leading security vendors.
