Yahoo! is to pull the plug on its Yahoo! Plus service which offered users extra security and storage above and beyond that available to users of free webmail and IM.

The $5.95 per month Yahoo! Plus service offered a personal firewall and parental controls as well as 2GB of storage. It will be switched off on 22 April after Yahoo! admitted interest in the service had led the company to realise "it was not an essential service for Yahoo! users".

A statement from Yahoo! said: "Yahoo! Plus is being discontinued as part of the company's ongoing commitment to focus on businesses that are core to our future growth."

Users who subscribed at an annual rate will be refunded while monthly subscribers were billed for the last time on 20 March, according to reports.
