Photos: Biometric security comes to Heathrow

Fingerprint and iris checks for air passengers...

By Andy McCue, 6 December 2006 15:50

The miSense trial at London's Heathrow Airport will use biometric fingerprint and iris scans to screen air passengers on selected Emirates and Cathay Pacific flights to and from Dubai and Hong Kong. The scheme will run until the end of January 2007 at Terminal 3 and is voluntary.

To register for miSense, passengers must undergo an enrolment check at Heathrow where their passport is checked, identity verified and biometrics scanned. The fingerprint scanner (pictured) records prints for all 10 digits.

Fingerprint readers & hand scanners: Polonium 210 on the hands of previous passengers?

More mundanely, what about ordinary infectious diseases: Everything from colds & stomach bugs to "bird 'flu" & SARS?

Great, progress at last. But how do we ensure you can't get through the vetting process with false ID anyway? And where will we able to pre-qualify other than at the airport?
