In brief: Heavywieghts back phone line networking

By Dominic Maher, 30 June 1998 16:07

NEWS Compaq, 3Com, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel and Lucent Technologies have teamed up to create the Home Office Phone line Networking Alliance. The group wants to use existing phone lines so users can establish networks in their homes. The move, which exploits the rising number of homes with more than one PC, was welcomed by Input analyst, Jamie Snowdon. "Using existing cable is a great idea if it means that you can plug straight in," he said. "It's not rocket science, but it would be clever if they could share that line with a ringing telephone." Snowdon explained that Ethernet is normally used, but "existing cable would still be able to carry up to 10Mbps".
