NEWS Compaq is to slash 5,000 jobs worldwide as part of its consolidation of Compaq, Digital and Tandem manufacturing operations. Around 500 of these will go from European operations in Scotland. In Monday's announcement, George Devlin, vice president of EMEA operations, said: "Compaq regrets the job losses, but we have to reduce our workforce around the world." The Tandem plant in Stirling will be closed and operations will be shifted over to Compaq's plant in Erskine, Scotland. Digital's PC production operation in Irvine will also go over to Erskine.
