NEWS The Java battle between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft has been put on hold until September. The companies agreed to postpone the case from 31 July to 4 September to give both sides more time to prepare. The July hearing had been set to discuss two motions filed by Sun in May, which attempted to stop Microsoft shipping Java tools that were not compatible with the 100 per cent Pure Java programme, and to ensure the Java-compatibility of Windows 98. The postponement is the latest episode in a battle that has been raging for months. Last October, Sun accused Microsoft of failing to comply with the specifications required for developing with Java. Microsoft denied the allegations, claiming it complies with the original specifications but does not need to meet those of updated versions in order to continue using the logo.
