NEWS Sun Microsystems is to change the Java standards process to include an external audit by an accounting firm. The appointment of a third party to audit the process is intended to tackle criticisms that Sun is too 'protectionist'. According to Jim Mitchell, vice president of technology and architecture for Sun's Java division, the as yet unnamed accounting firm will focus on the process which identifies and creates updated APIs and specifications. Mitchell added that the auditor will satisfy questions about how the Java standard is maintained. The auditing process will begin in September, but will only apply to the Personal Java specifications and not the next release of the Java Development Kit 1.2.
