NEWS GEC has won a three-year contract worth £400m to supply BT with equipment for its high-speed data network. GEC's Marconi Communications division will provide SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) transmission equipment for BT's core network. Mike Parton, MD of Marconi Communications, called the contract win "an excellent start" for the company, which was formed a month ago when GEC bought out Siemens' minority stake in telecoms manufacturer GPT, and merged the company with its Marconi SpA subsidiary.
