NEWS Sun's latest Java Development Kit (JDK) is set to be released in the autumn - one year later than originally scheduled. The long awaited JDK version 1.2 is expected to give Java the speed it has been criticised for lacking. Improvements to the JDK include a revamped user interface, Java foundation classes, security and digital signature technologies. However, Gary Barnett, analyst at research house Ovum, claimed JDK 1.2 will not solve all the performance issues. "It will be interesting to see it in action. It is going to be an improvement, but it won't be so much an improvement as the vendor hype," he said. The inclusion of the HotSpot compiler - a technology that enables any PC to run Java - has also been flaunted by Sun as a performance enhancer. HotSpot is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year. Barnett praised the announcement: "I welcome any improvement and anything which to a degree enables Java to run on any machine. HotSpot is potentially important there."
