IMI and i2 form defensive alliance

NEWS Software vendors IMI and i2 Technologies have joined forces to try and fend off the advances of the rapidly growing ERP (enterprise resource planning) vendors. IMI, an order execution software vendor, will jointly market and develop their products with i2 Technologies, a specialist in supply chain planning software. Kelly Jones, marketing manager at IMI claimed the move comes as the company feels increasing pressure from larger vendors such as SAP and Baan. "ERP vendors are now seeing that supply chain management is important and they are focusing on this. Vendors like SAP have announced plans to move into that area and as large software corporations they are a threat to companies like us," he said. IMI recently suffered when the value of its stock price fell by 86 per cent. Jones denied speculation the two companies were merging despite the fact they now share the same office space. However, the company claimed it would consider integrating existing products. "It's not formally on the cards but in reality it is not unlikely," said Jones.
