Fresh evidence could end Java court battle next week

NEWS The Java battle between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft could be over as early as next week thanks to the appearance of previously unseen evidence. Details contained in sealed documents could speed up Judge Whyte's decision on whether to suspend Microsoft products until they are Java compliant to Sun's specifications. Nearly 2000 pages of documents were released including transcripts of deposition by executives from both companies and internal emails. US District Court Judge Whyte previously claimed he would not make a ruling on the preliminary injunction until all the information had been released. The hearing for this injunction concluded on 10 September and the court's special advisor retired to wade through the mountains of evidence. If the judge rules in Sun's favour, Microsoft will have to stop shipping Windows 98, Internet Explorer and its Java development tools. A date has yet to be set for the trial.
