Ellison to unveil dedicated server

NEWS Oracle is expected to announce the launch of a server which will run its 8i database and Web server software without the need for a complicated operating system (OS). The announcement is due to made today by the company's chief executive, Larry Ellison, in his keynote speech at the Comdex Fall'98 trade fair. According to reports, the appliance would not do away with the need for an OS altogether, but would run on a stripped-down version of one of the emerging generation of 64bit platforms. This would automatically rule out Microsoft's server software - both Windows NT and the forthcoming Windows 2000 are 32bit systems. Oracle claims the device will deliver a lower cost of ownership than a full-blown NT or Unix server, making the job of database management simpler and cheaper, and reducing the reliance on OS support services. The company is reported to be negotiating with Dell, Sun, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard to provide the hardware. The announcement comes on the same day that Microsoft launches its SQL Server 7 database, the product it hopes will see it overtake Oracle in the high-end database market.
