NEWS The chairman of US delivery service giant UPS has warned businesses they must radically realign working practices to succeed in ecommerce or risk being "left in the dust by competitors". Jim Kelly told delegates at the International Mass Retail Association in Florida yesterday that: "Businesses involved in the supply chain will have to change their thinking and practices in order to harness ecommerce for success." Businesses must be aware, claimed Kelly, that the Internet is shifting the balance of power from suppliers, manufacturers and retailers to the customers. To accommodate this, he said, UPS has extended a network of electronic connections to its customers, adding electronic-based services which it claims put customers in the driving seat. UPS is one of a handful of large multinationals that have been striving to boost their profile on the world ecommerce stage by offering advice and soundbites to industry on how best to prepare for the Internet economy.
