Sun's Jini gets high-profile backing

By John Oates, 25 January 1999 18:37

NEWS Sun is announcing 35 licensees for its Jini technology, including IT heavyweights such as IBM, Cisco, 3Com, Sony, Toshiba and AOL. The Java-based software allows networked devices to talk to one another - creating instant networks. Sun claims Jini works in the same way that mobile phones link up to an invisible and all pervasive network. Jay Huff, European director of advanced technologies at Computer Associates - which has been involved in the development of Jini - said: "We see lots of opportunities as you move outside traditional IT. By linking up devices like digital cameras and televisions there is a need to track and manage what is happening on the network." Huff added that he did not believe one standard would prevail. "Microsoft is aggressively pushing plug and play - it's likely that several technologies will run along side each other." The first products using the language are expected by the end of this year.
