Web security plans slammed by e centre uk

NEWS The UK's leading ecommerce authority - e centre uk - has requested an urgent meeting with the National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) today to discuss its demands for full encryption-cracking powers over the Web. On Monday NCIS demanded that police have full monitoring capabilities on the Internet so they can kerb cybercrime. But e centre uk is concerned that strong controls will impede ecommerce development. Roger Till, e centre director, told Silicon.com: "e centre recognises that there are important issues for national security, but we are concerned that the management of keys and heavy control will reduce power of business." Till is confident that common ground can be reached, but he is extremely concerned that things will drag on even further. "It's a shame that NCIS have taken so long to express their concerns," he said. Pressure has been mounting recently for the policy makers, added Till, following last week's U-turn by the French government when it relaxed encryption controls leaving UK as the only European State with such a strong approach.
