New Zealand faces Y2K water crisis

NEWS New Zealand's nine largest cities have yet to make any contingency plans to maintain water supplies should the millennium bug strike down power supplies. The lack of preparedness was exposed by a joint government and Y2K Readiness Commission survey of 80 councils. According to a report in New Zealand's Evening Post, nine major city councils, including those in Auckland, Dunedin and Wellington, admitted they do not expect to be able to maintain water supplies for more than four hours in the event of a power blackout. Wellington Regional Council also admitted it has some way to go to ensure finance, transport and telecoms services are also Y2K-proof.
