Fujitsu plans colourful future

NEWS Fujitsu has stopped manufacturing black and white display screens, and is planning to sell off the division to Okaya Electric. The multinational IT supplier will focus instead on developing 42in colour TV screens as part of a joint venture with Hitachi announced earlier this month. A Fujitsu spokesman told Silicon.com: "We're expecting this market to grow quite a bit - for consumers and business. Hitachi used to be a competitor, but we've joined forces to speed up development times and bring prices down." Until now, Fujitsu's 42in Plasma Display Panels were used mainly for displaying information in railway stations, hospitals and stock exchanges. "It's been a natural progression to colour screens," said the spokesman. Okaya will use Fujitsu's monochrome operations to expand from DC (direct current) displays to AC (alternating current). The plants affected are mainly in Japan, although they do supply to overseas customers.
