NEWS Sun Microsystems is trying a new tack in its attempt to make Java an international standard, while relinquishing as little control over the language as possible. Java has been heading towards the International Standards Organisation (ISO) since November 1997, when Sun was given the authority to make a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) submission to the ISO. But according to US reports, the process has been halted because the ISO wants more control over Java's evolution in return for its standardisation. Now Sun is considering making its submission to another body, such as the European Computer Manufacturers Association. However, the company maintains that it will continue its quest to make Java an ISO standard.
