Europe faces Y2K blackout

NEWS Europe's infrastructure is at risk from the millennium bug, according to a report the European Commission is expected to present to European leaders at their summit in Cologne this week. The report speculates that nuclear facilities in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, as well as electricity, water and telecommunications services elsewhere, are not sufficiently prepared for Y2K. The Commission is concerned that power plants could fail, putting public safety at risk and disrupting electricity grids.
