NEWS Microsoft has hired ActiveState Tool to develop Perl scripts supporting the latest Windows features. Perl is an Open Source language, used for basic functions across the Internet. The three-year contract has prompted fears that the new features will not run on other platforms. While ActiveState Tool insists it will not create a custom version of Perl for Microsoft, a spokesman admitted: "Microsoft wants Perl to... take advantage of platform features on Windows." The company's Web site claims that new features which meet Perl's requirements will be distributed as Open Source, while the remainder, known as ActivePerl, will be offered free to Windows users. Its priorities are extending support for Unicode, Microsoft Installer and multiple interpreters.
