Intranets not working for UK businesses

NEWS UK companies are wasting money on potentially ineffectual intranet frameworks, according to a report by Cranfield University. The study, sponsored by business consultancy, Cap Gemini, identifies four key failings that lead to a financial drain paying few dividends - a poor understanding of cultural issues, sole control of intranets by finance and IT departments, lack of encouragement for user participation and a lack of proper planning. The report proposes a progressive development plan for companies to test the success and requirements of their intranets based on series of benchmarks. Geoff Smith, head of knowledge management at Cap Gemini, explained that some senior managers assume that by installing an intranet, they have somehow addressed the knowledge management and communication issues within their company. He added that organisations need to understand the real business benefits gained from a successful intranet - such as improved productivity and better customer relations through more efficient communication.
