Middleware industry set to explode

NEWS Revenues from the middleware industry could grow as much as 438 per cent within four years, according to the latest research by IDC. The value of the middleware market could increase from $2.2bn in 1998 to £11.6bn in 2003. Ed Acly, director of Systems Infrastructure Software at IDC, claimed that it was "less likely today that a distributed application program will be built without the use of a
middleware in one form or another." He explained the issue for middleware users over the next few years was not whether to use it for a distributed application program but whether to buy the middleware in the form of an independent product or as a technology embedded in another product. IDC predicted the business management systems sector will grow as users demand "a better way to deliver application integration." This growth will be accelerated by event-driven processing and business process automation.
