Small firms get free intranets

NEWS US-based Intranets.com has launched a service offering free intranet services to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). The package provides free intranet applications, Web hosting and an individual URL for each customer. The company hopes to attract small firms without the money or technical knowledge to set up their own system. According to Intranets.com founder, Bill Gross, demand is "skyrocketing". The company signed up over 5,000 businesses before its official launch this week, and it hopes to quadruple that number by September. Visitors to http://www.intranets.com are asked to fill in a registration form with details of their business, and the secure site can be set-up within minutes. Functionality includes shared calendars, a contact and supplier database, shared documents and a bulletin board. The free package also provides password-protected security, 25MB of space, site backup and free email support. Intranets.com has signed agreements with NewsEdge Corporation and Stockpoint to deliver news, business information and stock quotes to its customers. It has also announced a deal with Digital River to provide an online store for software downloads and digital products.
