NEWS In the second quarter of this year, Microsoft licensed 4.14 million Exchange Server seats worldwide, compared with 3.89 million Lotus Notes seats, according to a report by IDC. Including first-quarter figures, total sales of Exchange Server seats reached 8.1 million as opposed to 7.42 million for Notes - a difference of 673,000 seats. Microsoft claims that Exchange Server has now been licensed to over 34 million users since its release in 1996 and the growth of licensees is due to the increasing use of the product as a messaging platform for workflow and customer-tracking solutions.
