Cable & Wireless pulls the police force together

NEWS Cable & Wireless has won an exclusive contract to provide the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) with an intranet which will enable police forces nationwide to communicate online with each other. It will also provide access to databases such as the Police National Computer (PNC), the National Strategy for Police Information Systems (NSPIS), and its Scottish counterpart, SPIS and open a channel to the criminal justice community. Cable & Wireless' track record of developing IP-based intranets and extranets includes the Government Secure Internet (GSI), a secure network between government departments and agencies, which is part of the 'Joined Up Government' initiative. Chris Boelrijk, the Project Director at PITO, said that Cable & Wireless won the contract on the basis of their intranet experience, the cost-effectiveness of their proposition and the incorporation of databases such as NSPIS into their intranet. PITO expects front-line officers to be the main beneficiaries of the technology, hoping that it will reduce time spent 'paper shuffling' and increase the efficiency of information retrieval.
