NEWS Each week, 200 more parents learn that their child has special needs. These parents do not just have to understand the full implications of that special need, but they must also learn how to communicate with other parents in a similar situation to minimise the feeling of isolation. The children need stimulation and support to realise their full potential, or at least have a good quality of life. The KIDS charity exists to support these parents and children, who's disabilities range from visual impairment through to terminall illness. It comprises four centres based in Birmingham, Farnham, Hull and Camden, London, and during 1998 helped nearly 5,000 children and adults. The need for KIDS services has never been more acute, which is why IT Relief aims to raise £150,000 during 1999 to support it. This amount would represent a significant proportion of KIDS' yearly budget. KIDS has made a commitment that funds will be dedicated to IT. Internet access will be available in the centres and used in unison with developmental play sessions. KIDS has also received support from celebrities including Elizabeth Hurley and Samantha Bond, who will be involved in various fundraising activities leading up to the IT Relief Gala Ball on Friday 8 October 1999.
