NEWS Sun Microsystems has launched Java Media Framework (JMF) 2.0, an application programming interface (API) that lets programmers write time-based media, like streaming audio and video, into Java applications and applets. JMF 2.0 was developed jointly by Sun and IBM. It is designed to give developers advanced media processing capabilities, including media capture, compression, and transmission. Sun says the API will support media types including MP3, Flash, Real-time Transport Protocol and Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTP/RTSP), Quicktime, and Microsoft's AVI format. Sun claims the technology will give programmers the freedom to design media-rich applications for all major operating systems.
