FDA smokes e-drug sellers out of US territory

NEWS The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US has taken further steps to ensure operators of online pharmacies located overseas are warned they may be selling prescription drugs illegally to US citizens. For the first time, the FDA has sent out letters electronically in the hope that it will help tracking down online pharmacies that are hard to locate. The letters, also sent on paper where applicable, warn companies that the drugs could have a diverse effect on users, and in the future shipments could be prevented from entering the country. The news follows a speech given this week by the FDA's commissioner, Dr Jane Henney, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She voiced concerns over "rogue traders" taking advantage of customers looking for cheaper drugs online. The FDA is calling for fines of up to $500,000 every time drugs are sold this way, without prior consent from the US.
