Lotus claims advantage over Win2000

NEWS Lotus will support Windows 2000 for its Notes and Domino environment, however, it claims the software's platform neutrality will give it a distinct advantage over Microsoft's rival groupware offering Exchange 2000. Lotus claims Exchange 2000 will require users to adopt the Windows 2000 operating system and Active Directory. It says that Notes users will benefit from being able to choose whichever operating system meets their particular need. Lotus intends to develop Notes to take advantage of Windows 2000 features but will continue to avoid dependence on any one operating system. Clive Longbottom, analyst at Strategy Partners, said - despite Lotus's assertions - that Exchange would work on other platforms for email, but agreed the knowledge management applications of Exchange 2000 would suffer if taken off Windows 2000. If you are running Exchange on another operating system, he said: "The more you start to use the technology in an advanced way to differentiate your business the more of an problem it will become."
