NEWS The maritime industry is the latest to set up an online trading forum, courtesy of two young, Norwegian shipping magnates. Following hot on the heels of WHSmith and a group of leading car manufacturers, Arvid Bergvall and Henrik Platou are making the most of their family connections with e-procurement site, 1-Sea. They announced today that Computer Associates will supply their e-commerce platform, for an undisclosed sum. Bergvall, CEO of 1-Sea, told Silicon.com that the maritime industry is "fragmented, global and heavily brokered", making it the ideal target for a business-to-business service. "The Web sets up a new cost base," he said. "We offer direct trading between oil buyers looking for transportation and - increasingly - between buyers and sellers of cruise line supplies in the luxury market." 1-Sea launched in June 1999 and has received over $6m in investment from shipping companies including Vships, Bergesen and Worldwide. Bergvall hopes to float the company later this year.
