NEWS Car manufacturers are too slow in delivering the goods. This is the conclusion drawn by the International Automotive Conference in Sunderland yesterday. Experts say that the industry needs to re-invent itself and embrace the Internet in order to survive. Colin Wilson, a senior manager responsible for Automotive Supply Chain from CAP Gemini, said: "Manufacturers need to create an electronic trade exchange which will then do all the planning, scheduling and logistics. The industry must embrace technology to grow." Customers expect vehicles to be delivered three days after placing an order but according to Lance Doughty, director of manufacturing at Cap Gemini, the manufacturers do not live up to the promise. In addition, several new challenges face the industry: accelerated pace in development; excess production; and competition from new entrants such as P&O and Virgin.
