American Express to use Java in smartcard

NEWS Sun Microsystems is expected to announce later today that it has signed a deal with American Express to develop Java-based smartcards. The announcement will be made at Sun's JavaOne 2000 developer conference in San Francisco. According to Reuters, American Express will integrate Java with its existing Blue smartcard product - a traditional magnetic strip card with a smartcard chip for security. At the conference, the two companies will announce a competition to encourage developers to write applications for the smartcard.
