Poor service is not deterring online grocery shoppers

NEWS Online grocery shopping in Europe will grow twenty-fold in the next five years despite shaky customer service. According to Forrester Research, 90 per cent of Tesco's ecommerce customers recommend the service to others even though they may wait up to a week for a delivery slot and see 13 per cent of each order filled incorrectly. But apparently customers are willing to set aside those considerations in their desperation to avoid the supermarket. Forrester said online grocery shopping in Europe will outstrip its US counterpart, growing from only 0.5 per cent of the market right now to five per cent by 2005. In other news US online grocery retailer Webvan acquired rival Homegrocer in a stock swap worth $1.2bn this week. The companies currently operate in nine US cities, but expect to extend their reach to 13 within the year.
