Reverse bidding opens cheap petrol possibility

NEWS Campaigners for cheaper petrol are looking to use US auction portal Priceline.com to beat high pump prices. Priceline operates a reverse auction system in the US that allows consumers to name a price for petrol, giving local petrol stations the chance to meet it. It says it has achieved average discounts of $0.12 per gallon for users in the US, and plans to offer similar services in the UK within a year, according to reports. Priceline.com has courted controversy through its use of patents to protect internet business processes. Priceline is currently involved in a legal wrangle with Microsoft over its claim to own the process of reverse bidding on the web.
