Camelot fights back in lottery row

By Julian Goldsmith, 30 August 2000 08:30

NEWS The UK National Lottery operator, Camelot, last night won the right to a judicial review of its rejected bid to continue to hold the franchise. The National Lottery Commission had ruled that the company was unsuitable to run the lottery after its software supplier, G-Tech, failed to admit that a flaw in its software had caused some Lottery winners to receive incorrect amounts of money. The Commission has given rival consortium, The People's Lottery, headed up by Richard Branson, a month to secure the finance it needs to run the lottery. The review will take place in mid-September. In the meantime, the Commission will continue its negotiations with The People's Lottery, despite a failed attempt by Camelot to get an injunction stopping it from doing so. Camelot has offered to smooth the waters by acquiring the lottery software it used from G-Tech. At the same time, G-Tech has announced it intends to reduce its workforce by 175 staff, or four per cent, following a strategic review.
