Sun opens up Solaris source code

By Sally Watson, 30 August 2000 13:16

NEWS Sun Microsystems is continuing its bid to win popularity in the development community by releasing source code for its internationalisation technology. The program is part of Sun's Solaris operating system and allows web content to be translated into 37 languages and 123 local dialects, without the need for additional code. Sun will release the code on 15 September to X.org, a non-profit standards group popular with developers worldwide. Mike Rogers, VP of Sun's global engineering and information services, claims the release will accelerate the availability of global applications for the UNIX community. Rogers said in a statement: "To date, many open source applications could not reach international markets because applications have needed additional customised code for each spoken language and locale."
