Industry experts have applauded the data privacy agreement which was struck by EU and US authorities earlier this week.

NEWS The agreement, known as the Safe Harbour law, came into force on Wednesday, and allows EU companies to send personal information on individuals to the US for the first time. Christopher Upton, CEO of Clicksure and one of the guests on this week's Behind the Headlines programme, claimed US companies were already beginning to take the issue of data protection more seriously. But another panellist, Jonathan Steele, chairman of the Bathwick Group, questioned how the directive could be policed. Also up for discussion on this week's edition was a story about Orange's network problems in London and the South East. Sources told silicon.com that the mobile provider was facing capacity problems while upgrades take place. Reacting to the story, Philip Carnelly, analyst at Ovum, said: "Mobile phones are commodities now. The prices are so similar that the only differential is quality of service, so companies have to address this issue." Steele, an Orange customer, said that he too had suffered from network access problems. He added: "Patchy delivery could have an impact on the mobile providers' ability to get back the money they've spent on 3G licenses.'
