AOL calls the shots in WAP browser battle

AOL Time Warner has hired a new big gun to head up Netscape, and fired the first shot in the US WAP browser wars in a deal with Nokia to develop a WAP browser.

NEWS Subsidiary Netscape, which lays claim to 37 million members worldwide, is to licence Nokia technology to develop and market a Netscape-branded version of the Finnish company's WAP browser. The agreement with the world leader in handsets will give Netscape a boost as it takes on established and dominant US back-end carrier technology company Openwave System. Netscape's new president, Jim Bankoff, is a five-year AOL veteran who played a major part in the integration of Netscape and AOL as vice president of strategy and operations. He replaces Jim Martin who AOL says has an 'impressive series of accomplishments' with Netscape and will move to other duties with AOL.
